       Outside My Window
Now the trees are really turning at the
end of October. Leaves are falling and
so fun to scuff through.
The sidewalks are carpets of fall colors. And
rain seems not far off. The air now has a bit
of bite to it now...I love Fall outside my window.
Excitement is in the air as Halloween gets
closer. The stores have scary things around every
corner. Jack-O-Lanterns sit on front porches,
scary things hang from tree branches. Is that
a real person or just a sacrecrow.
The night seems to come alive this time of year.
Things with wings and scary faces seem to be
everywhere. The little children are glowing, thinking
of bags filled with candy and special treats.
I am thinking of sitting in the window behind a
sheer curtain, lights off with my mother. We
have a dozen fresh donuts. I picked them up on
my way home from work.
Inside the icebox a gallon of fresh apple cider.
Yup time to watch the trick-or-treaters all
dressed up walk by. We munch donuts and sip
cider...each choosing the best costume as
they walk by.
Parents push strollers with toddlers and babies.
Children run ahead and the air is filled with
the voices of excited kids as they shout and
laugh...sometimes screaming in fear.
Bags loaded with candy treasure. Will there
be rain that night and far less people. We
hope not. There goes a little pirate, Oh look
a vampire and a fairy.
A little princess and lots of cartoon costumes,
here comes Ironman,Spiderman and a host
of super heros. So much fun to watch.
The wind is blowing and as darkness falls
that wind becomes errie as it whistles around the
window pane...shaking and rattling the window.
Sometimes we think we hear a howl but it is just
the wind outside my window. Donuts are just
crumbs and smears of icing and sprinkles.
Glasses empty now we move away from the
window and head for bed. I turn on WRVO
public radio and tune into the scary stories
they run every year for Halloween.
And tucked between cozy sheets and fluffy
blankets, I listen with delish thrills as voices
act out the spooky stories. Oh yes this is
the best way to spend Halloween.
Outside my winow it has started to rain,
the patter of raindrops make my eyes heavy,
they drift closed and another Halloween is
almost to a close.
Cars drive home with children too tired from
walking to care about more than a couple
pieces of candy.
And when in bed they dream of monsters and
things with wings. Smiles on chocolate rimmed
lips...chocolate kisses as little eyes drift shut.
They relive the excitmaent in dreams...and
the moon peeks out for a moment outside my
window...goodbye Halloween and Goodnight!
